Access to various low level operating system features is done in C , see
"13 Ports and Port Drivers" in the erlang reference manual.
One can also create nodes entirely in C, see "11.6 C Nodes" in the same manual.
"A C node is a C program written to act as a hidden node in a
distributed Erlang system."
