< Erlang ~ Why Erlang over an MPI library for C? |

I can't figure out why exactly one would choose Erlang over an MPI library for C (such as openMP). Performance wise, I think the C program should be faster no? So what benefits would I gain by using Erlang?
Why did for example amazon choose Erlang for their simpleDB - I'm sure there is some really valid reason which I am missing...

Erlang programs are easier to debug and have better reliability.
Compared with OpenMP, The Erlang programming style does not use shared memory.
I guess that once you have learned the Erlang way of parallel programming, you could apply it to your C/C++ programs. |

What do you mean when you say it can be more reliable?
Moreover openMP is a Message Passing Interface implementation and hence it should not use shared memory no? |

Just because it is a message passing interface does not mean that it does not have shared memory. It could very well allow sending pointers in messages and the receiver could access memory through the pointer.
However, the real cruncher is not really just shared memory but shared mutable memory, that's where the problems lie. Whether erlang copies data when sending messages is actually an implementation detail, but all data in erlang is immutable. This is the Big Win.
Now you can do it in C but it is not enforced and once you break the rule you are lost. |
