About keeping session servers completely separate from the yaws servers (the most extreme case)... would this be cause for scalability issues, do you think? If, say, each acquisition/release of a session would be an internode message?

I think it's common practice in "enterprise" architecture to keep
session data in the database to avoid session loss in case of a web
server crash. Since most architectures have separate machines for the
database servers and web servers, our approach wouldn't be any worse
than the "standard" way of doing it. In fact, it'll probably be faster
-- on average -- due to the fact that some web servers would have
session data locally in RAM.

This sounds fascinating, but maybe a bit too complex at least for my
needs  I think it's ok for some applications assume that the master
IP address is owned by a load balancer that doesn't crash.

Yes, and I think that due to Mnesia and the existing session support
using ets, most of the hard work is already done It mostly involves
letting the user configure the session database and use a couple of
new session read/store functions.
It's so cool that Erlang has an embedded database with built-in clustering!!!
