Yesterday, I started working with yapp in my development environment: win32 yaws 1.90, Erlang OTP R14B03. Followed the instructions for yapp_intro, and everything worked like a charm!

Today, I tried getting the same configuration working on an Amazon EC2 micro instance that I'm using to stage and share developed code.

Following compile and mnesia schema creation, I stopped my Yaws daemon and fired it up in interactive mode. Yapp would get as far as waiting for Yaws to become available, announce it was starting, and then do nothing more. Silent failure.

Attempting to load the file from erl commandline reported a syntax error in yapp.app. Upon closer examination, it turned out that %VSN% and %MODULES% had not been replaced during the make from yapp.app.src.

Examining the Yaws include.mk, I discovered that the regex code in APPSCRIPT was looking for what looked like a pattern you'd see after direct checkout from git. Tooling APPSCRIPT to get it to match on the %var% form got me a yapp.app file with proper substitutions and no syntax errors.

So, I went back to yaws -i. This time I get pretty quickly:

This suggests to me that something within the yapp supervisory tree is not starting properly, but I'm hesitant to start trying each and every module to see which one is dying a horrible death, without at least asking if anyone else has seen this problem before.

The funny thing is, it's usually Win32 versions of apps that are the most problem getting started in my experience. And yet when I start yaws -i using the very same Yaws 1.90 install package on my netbook, it happily ticks away, notifying me as it adds each yapp listed in yaws.conf. I'm blown away that getting the same thing to work on a (virtual) linux box has been such a challenge.

Further, after again blowing away and recreating the Mnesia db, 1.89 yapp loads and inserts yapps without incident.

What's particularly confusing is that the yapps are all added to "internal server", but yaws goes down on a query to "external server" if any yapps other than yapp itself are in the registry.

I downloaded the yaws-1.89.tar.gz (yaws source) to install yaws in SUSE.
I did -
./configure them when I tried to make it is giving me error ---

epam.c:2:22: fatal error: pam_appl.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make[1]: *** [epam.o] Error 1

I have installed erlang(version -5.7.5) there successfully....

Please help....

How do I open an erlang shell on the running yaws daemon once it's started? Is it even possible?

Basically I'd like to occasionally inspect its status and the erlang shell seems like the most obvious option. What are the best practices to do that?

Only thing I am aware of is yaws --ls and --status.

Hi,

I am using Yaws for dynamic html with version 1.88,

I have a situation where I have to start up yaws when server starts or reboots, so I have started up yaws with rc.local file with full path to start up yaws in daemon mode.

This is successfull. But when I try to get some command line commands such as "yaws --status, --stop" I get a result No yaws system responds. but when i try to find ps -ef, I would see an entry with yaws. Even if I try to kill the process, with port already in use. I am unable start yaws unless i restart again by diabling yaws on the start up. Any work around or solution for this?

Am i doing anything wrong?

BTW, I am using CentOS 5.5

I have a "http" "proxy" in yaws that uses ibrowse to forward the request

I would like to have the yaws server write any new files with a umask of
002, so that another user in the yaws group can modify, move, or delete
files created by the yaws server. I am running yaws 1.84 on Ubuntu
10.04.

I did not find any configuration option for the yaws.conf.

I tried adding to the config file /etc/default/yaws
umask 002
but did not work.

I also tried changing the init script, /etc/init.d/yaws:
script="$DAEMON -I $YAWS_ID $@"
to
script="umask 002; $DAEMON -I $YAWS_ID $@"
This did work, but I'm not sure editing the init script is the best way
of making this easy to document and configure on multiple machines.

I also found a reference to the pam_umask module here
(http://muzso.hu/2008/01/22/default-permissions-with-libpam-umask)
and edited /etc/pam.d/common-session, adding the line:
session optional pam_umask.so umask=022
Then running the command:
sudo chfn -o "umask=002" yaws
to add a umask setting to /etc/passwd.
This also worked, but only for non-interactive, non-login shells such as
the yaws server daemon. For login shells you need to also remove umask
setting from /etc/profile, otherwise it overrides settings made by the
pam_umask module.

Which is the better way to set the umask for the yaws server? Or is
there another way?

I can run the Yaws WebSockets example:

with Google Chrome (5.0.375.125). However, the example fails on Safari 5.01, in the connect call:

the new WebSocket call seems to work, but assignment of the onopen property on the socket results in an error reported on the console:

"Error during WebSocket handshake: 'sec-websocket-origin' header is missing"

though the code keeps running. However, the onclose fails on the last line:

with "TypeError: Result of expression '$('msg')' [null] is not an object." I see that $ refers to a function, which is getting the msg element off the document (DOM), which appears not to exist. E.g., in the shell:

I think that's a red herring, though, and can easily be fixed. The real error seems to be around the web sockets handshake, which I know less about. Anyone have any expertise?

Any chance you could submit a test case that shows the problem? I
think what you're seeing is similar to another problem I was looking
at a couple weeks ago, but I'm swamped right now and don't really have
cycles to build my own test case to reproduce this.

If i set it to no_limit, there is no problem, but i want to set it to an integer because i want to stream the upload file chunk by chunk to handle the large uploaded file

I tried to write appmod to handle upload file, When uploaded file size > option max_file_size( about 50MB for exp), in out function, we have to return {ehtml, {p,[], "error message"}}, but the out function is called twice and in browser, i see "Connection Interrupted".

Ok - here is my attempt to do it. The behaviour is controlled by four
per-<server> configuration variables:

yawsmaxruntime and yawsmaxreductions can be used to limit the number
of seconds/reductions the execution of a single .yaws file may take.
For websocket processes, the settings wsmaxruntime and wsmaxreductions
apply.

This has currently the following limitations:
* Not tested in production
* Monitor must run on the same node as the workers (due to a
limitation in erlang:process_info)
* No proper HTTP response is sent if a worker is terminated due to
exceedance of a limit (This is somewhat impossible in streaming
mode anyway)

Hi,

my yawst have a lot of files in doc-root (600000 files), and the startup take several minutes. It also takes alot of CPU-time.

Thats my conf:

php_exe_path = /usr/bin/php-cgi
max_num_cached_files = 1
<server localhost>
port = 9876
listen = 0.0.0.0
docroot = /home/christian/dev/hunter_templates
dir_listings = true
allowed_scripts = yaws php cgi
</server>

Any ideas how to speed up the startup? I think yaws try to index all files, for me that's not necassary.

Hello,

I recently screwed up in a .yaws script which led to a runaway "loop"
under certain conditions. I got more and more worker processes that
consumed all available CPU time. Yaws got slower and slower until I
finally noticed what was wrong.

IMHO it'd be nice if one could limit the number of reductions and/or
maximum time a request is allowed to take per <server>. This could be
easily done by using a monitor process that regularily checks all
worker processes and kills rogue ones if necessary. This would work so
long as worker processes do not spawn more processes. It would also
work for websocket processes, since their PIDs are passed back to yaws
when created.

What do you think?
