What ejabberdctl script are you using? You need to make sure that you start
ejabberdctl with the same options as you started ejabberd (-name or -sname,
and 'something@something').

I am using the ejabberdctl which came with ejabberd-1.1.1 linux
installer. It starts with:
NODE=default
HOST=xmpp1.zweitgeist.com
VERSION=1.1.1
Seems to work as user "ejabberd" sometimes. My earlier tests where as "root".
As user "ejabberd" I get the number SOMETIMES.
Sometimes, I rather get this (I hope this does not harm the server,
but only the new erl shell):
/home/ejabberd/ejabberd-1.1.1/bin# ./ejabberdctl connected-users-number
{error_logger,{{2006,11,2},{15,38,41}},supervisor_report,[{supervisor,{local,kernel_sup}},{errorContext,start_error},{reason,{'DOWN',#Ref<0.0.0.17>,process,<0.15.0>,normal}},{offender,[{pid,undefined},{name,code_server},{mfa,{code,start_link,[]}},{restart_type,permanent},{shutdown,2000},{child_type,worker}]}]}
