m2ts and mkv are both containers which have no bearing on the amount of compression used. An m2ts file taken from a Blu-ray or an AVCHD disk is bigger than an mkv with file the same contents, because the m2ts file contains extra file structure information that you don’t need.
Additionally, when repacking an m2ts into an mkv, people usually remove any audio streams they don’t want. Why would you keep a French dub of an American film if you can’t speak French?
