The ping pong application from the "Getting Started with Erlang" tutorial (p. 30), although spawns 2 processes (ping and pong) does _not_ use 2 cores.
Why?
What conditions must be met to take advantage of two cores withing a single Erlang node?
The Erlang version is R12B and the number of cores is properly recognized as 2:

An Erlang process will take microseconds to be spawned and start off with a very small memory footprint. Two processes are not enough to see the benefits of SMP. You need to have an application which spawns thousands of processes which all do something at the same time. I would suggest you install ejabberd and test it with tsung. You should see a 40% increase in performance on a dual core machine.
