< Erlang ~ Understanding match_spec syntax |

I'm having a hard time understanding match specifications from the description in the ERTS User's Guide. The syntax appears different from Erlang and I don't see a consistent pattern in it.
Starting with the simplest, here are some questions I have:
1. On page 3, get_tcw is listed as an allowed GuardFunction for ets match_specs. Is that a typo?
2. For both trace and ets match_specs, float division (/) is not listed among the GuardFunctions. Deliberate omission?
3. What are the rules on single-quoting? It seems completely random. Why are variables quoted? Why is 'and' quoted but andalso is not?
