Hi All!
I have a wish to build the voip softswitch with transcoding.
Is Erlang really enough to do transcoding or better write transcoding part as external process on C, C++ lang?

You can give it a try with G711, which is simple enough. Whether it will be good enough depends on your throughput requirements. If your G711 transcoding is too slow, you obviously needen't bother with the more complex algorithms.
If you decide to move transcoding out of the Erlang VM, which is probably a good idea, you could consider using Haskell or OCaml, but you should test with continous throughput to see whether GC pauses will get in the way.
Of course, if you stick to C/C++, you're likely to find free implementations of many audio and video codecs on the web. Intel has a ton of codecs that are free for use (no support or IPR responsibility though). |
